Skin Cancer Q & A

What is skin cancer?

Skin cancer is a disease that causes the body’s skin cells to grow and multiply rapidly. As a result, the cells mutate, and tumors develop in the skin’s outer layer (epidermis). It’s the most common cancer in men and women alike.

While skin cancer is usually treatable with early intervention, waiting too long to seek professional medical care can damage your skin and lead to more serious complications.

What does skin cancer look like?

While there are many types of skin cancer, the most common include:

Basal cell carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma, the most common type of skin cancer, develops in sun-exposed areas like the face, neck, chest, and ears. These lesions tend to appear flat, waxy, or raised.

Squamous cell carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma can invade the skin’s deeper layers. It’s more aggressive and can spread to other areas. The lesions can look like rough patches, open sores, or thick, wart-like bumps.

Melanoma

Melanoma looks like an abnormal mole. The most dangerous and aggressive type of skin cancer, melanoma can spread quickly. Early intervention is essential to effectively treat this serious skin disorder.

How do doctors diagnose skin cancer?

A comprehensive skin cancer screening, or mole check, is the first step in diagnosing skin cancer. Dr. Williams uses a device similar to a magnifying glass, called a dermatoscope, to closely examine each lesion. He thoroughly checks each crevice of your body, including in between your fingers and toes, to ensure he doesn’t overlook any suspicious moles or lesions.

If Dr. Williams finds any concerning areas, he may take a skin biopsy. A pathologist examines the sample under a microscope to diagnose skin cancer.

What is the most effective treatment for skin cancer?

Dr. Williams offers many effective treatments for skin cancer, including:

  • Shave excision
  • Simple excision
  • Cryosurgery
  • Chemical peels (for precancer)

As a highly skilled Mohs surgeon, Dr. Williams can effectively remove cancerous lesions while preserving your healthy tissue with Mohs surgery. This procedure involves removing the lesion in layers and examining each layer under a microscope, ensuring he removes every cancerous cell. Mohs surgery requires extensive training and skill to perform effectively.
